Bamana (Bambara) Horned Mask, Mali - Hand-Carved Tribal Wood Sculpture, ca. mid-20th century - Authentic African Ritual Art
This impressive Bamana (Bambara) horned mask originates from Mali, West Africa, and was hand-carved from a single block of dense hardwood. Measuring approximately 60 cm in height, distinctive long, upward-curving horns and elongated facial form typical of Bamana ceremonial masks.
Masks of this type were traditionally used in initiation and agricultural rituals of the Bamana people. They often represented spiritual forces associated with strength, fertility, and protection of the community. The mask's elegant geometry and minimalistic form reflect the refined abstraction characteristic of West African sculpture, early to mid 20th-century.
The surface shows an aged patina with traces of red and metallic pigments, suggesting ceremonial use and long-term handling. Small triangular metal inlays and scarification patterns add both aesthetic and symbolic significance.
Mounted on a custom black metal display stand, this piece exemplifies the intersection of sculptural beauty and cultural depth — a museum-quality object that harmonises with both tribal collections and modern interiors.
