Chinese Republic Period Reverse Glass Painting (ca. 1915-1935) - Lady and Child in Garden Pavilion
A fine reverse glass painting (huitouhua 背画) from the Chinese Republic period (ca. 1915-1935). This traditional technique, introduced to China during the 18th century, was mastered during the late Qing and Republic eras, requiring the artist to paint in reverse directly onto glass.
The composition depicts a refined lady seated in a garden pavilion, dressed in a pale pink robe with gilt details, accompanied by a boy reaching playfully toward a red pillar. Behind them, stylized rocks, bamboo, and architectural elements provide a symbolic backdrop. Scenes of ladies with children were popular during this period, expressing themes of domestic harmony, prosperity, and longevity.
Period: Republic of China (1912-1949)
Technique: Reverse glass painting (huitouhua)
Subject: Elegant lady and child in a garden setting
Dimensions: approx. 66 × 45 cm (including hardwood frame)
Frame: Original dark hardwood frame with decorative brass/bronze hanger
Condition: Good, with minor age-related wear, some expected paint loss at edges; glass intact, colors strong.
This is a representative and well-preserved example of Republican decorative art, blending traditional symbolism with the delicate technique of reverse glass painting. Collectible for connoisseurs of Chinese glass art and suitable as a decorative statement piece.
