Rare 18th-Century Chinese Altar Statue of Caishen - Gilded & Polychrome Wood - Qing Dynasty
Beautiful and rare Chinese temple or household shrine figure of Caishen, the god of wealth and prosperity. This piece likely dates from the late 18th century (circa 1780-1800), during the Qing Dynasty.
Hand-carved from wood, with original gold leaf gilding and vibrant polychrome paint in red, black, and green. Caishen is shown seated on a throne, wearing a crown and earrings — classic symbols of divine authority and abundance. His rounded belly is a well-known symbol of wealth and good fortune.
This statue was likely used in a domestic or temple altar setting and shows extensive signs of veneration and age: pigment loss, surface wear, old wormholes (stabilized), and craquelure. The back is hollowed, indicating it was once mounted inside a niche or cabinet.
Dimensions:
Height: approx. 29 cm (11.4")
Width: approx. 20 cm (7.9")
Depth: approx. 16 cm (6.3")
Condition:
Unrestored and richly patinated. All wear and imperfections are consistent with age and use. No modern repainting or repairs detected. A genuine, atmospheric piece.
Provenance:
Private collection, Germany. Likely from Southern China.
Shipping:
Carefully packed and insured shipping worldwide.
