A 19th-century West African manilla in the traditional open ring form with a ribbed body and rounded terminals. Manillas were used as a form of currency, ceremonial gifts and symbols of status in several West African cultures. This example originates from West Africa, probably Nigeria, where manillas remained in use for trade and ceremonial purposes well into the 19th century.
