Devotional Painting on Textile - Madonna and Child, Cusco School or Southern European Origin, 18th Century.
Hand-painted textile with gold ornamentation, approx. 53 x 73 cm (unframed)

This remarkable devotional artwork, executed on handwoven textile, presents a tender and intimate depiction of the Virgin Mary embracing the Christ Child. Both figures are encircled by radiant halos, rendered in delicate gold lines—a motif closely tied to Catholic baroque iconography and prevalent in both colonial Latin America and Southern Europe.

Likely dating from the 18th century, this piece embodies the ornate aesthetic and devotional fervor characteristic of that period. The richly patterned robes, adorned with floral and foliate gold motifs, were most likely applied using stencil or stamp techniques—common practice in religious workshops catering to both monastic and popular devotion.

The visual language aligns closely with the Cusco School (Escuela Cusqueña), a prominent artistic movement of the Viceroyalty of Peru, yet also shares features with Southern European religious folk art. The expressive faces, elongated hands, and symmetrical composition speak to a tradition that valued emotional immediacy over academic realism.

The frayed edges and visible stitch marks suggest the textile may have originally served as a processional banner (estandarte) or devotional hanging. The reused textile backing, with traces of green printed lettering, underscores the modest origins of the piece—typical of religious art made by or for the common faithful.

Though unsigned, the painting exhibits fine craftsmanship and spiritual intensity. The gilded ornamentation and serene expressions evoke a deeply rooted devotional culture, and its survival in such condition adds both historical and aesthetic value.

Condition:
The textile shows age-appropriate wear, including fraying, minor pigment loss, and evidence of prior handling. These signs of use reflect the piece's function in active devotional life. It has been preserved in a museum-grade frame with protective glass and a gold-toned border.

Provenance:
Acquired from a European auction house. Believed to have been produced in the 18th century.

Dimensions:
Approx. 53 x 73 cm (21 x 29 inches), unframed
Approx. 59 x 79 cm (23 x 31 inches), framed

This rare 18th-century devotional textile would be a distinguished addition to any collection of religious art, colonial iconography, or historical textiles.
