19th Century Colonial Coconut Shell Casket with Brass Mounts | c. 1850-1875
An unusual 19th-century casket, handcrafted from two polished coconut shell halves and mounted with hand-worked brass. The casket is raised on a matching coconut shell base and features a hinged lid with a turned finial.
The brass mounts have been carefully shaped and decorated by hand with punched ornamentation. Over time, the brass has acquired a rich natural patina that contrasts beautifully with the deep tones of the polished coconut shell.
Dating from the mid towards second half of the 19th century, this casket was likely produced for the colonial market. It is possibly of West African origin, although an exact place of manufacture remains uncertain.
Condition
Very good antique condition with light wear consistent with age and use. The brass retains an attractive aged patina, and the hinge is in good working order.
Dimensions
Height: approx. 19 cm (7.5 in)
Length: approx. 13 cm (5.1 in)
Width: approx. 9 cm (3.5 in)
Carefully packed and secured shipping
