Japanese Imari Covered Jar
Arita kilns, Japan, early 18th century (c. 1700-1730)
Small Japanese Imari porcelain covered jar of globular form with a slightly tapering neck and domed cover. Decorated in underglaze blue and iron-red enamels with floral sprays, scrolling foliage and stylised blossoms, arranged in horizontal bands. The cover is surmounted by a small moulded finial. The foot is encircled by a geometric border. The glaze shows fine crackle consistent with early Imari porcelain.
This type of covered jar was produced at the Arita kilns for export to the European market in the early 18th century and reflects the mature Imari palette and decorative freedom of the period.
