Exquisite 19th‑Century Russian Orthodox Register Icon
Presenting a finely preserved post‑Byzantine icon, likely crafted in a provincial Russian workshop between 1820 and 1880, that brings together a harmonious ensemble of Christ and five revered saints on a single gilded panel.
At its zenith, Christ Pantokrator emerges from a swirling cloud‑mandorla, His right hand raised in blessing as He holds the Gospel Book in His left. Below, five full‑length figures stand in dignified repose, each framed by a delicate red halo and identified by crisp Greek inscriptions:
1. Saint Basilissa - the noble female martyr at far left, her gaze serene.
2. Saint Basil the Great - the celebrated Cappadocian Father, vested in episcopal robes and clutching the Gospel.
3. Saint Nicholas - centrally placed as the icon's spiritual anchor, offering blessing and wisdom.
4. Saint Matrona - the monastic ascetic, draped in her maphorion with heartfelt devotion.
5. A Fifth Martyress - her identity lost to time but her presence adding mystery and depth.
Key Features:
Rich Hammered-Gold Ground: Finely punched "rosette" decoration that catches light and accentuates the sacred tableau.
Linear, Elegant Faces: Subtle chiseling of features typical of 19th‑century provincial iconography.
Vibrant Polychromy: Original pigments remain remarkably fresh, especially in the deep blues, carmine reds, and burnished highlights.
Authentic Greek Lettering: Clear inscriptions attest to its Orthodox heritage.
Dimensions & Condition:
Panel size: see photos in cm
Minor age‑related craquelure and gentle edge wear consistent with a well‑cared‑for devotional object. small bending
