Terracotta (or patinated plaster) bust depicting Ludwig van Beethoven, late 19th to early 20th century.
The bust represents the composer in a classical 19th-century style, with characteristic high forehead, expressive eyes and untamed hair. The base bears the name "LUDWIG", identifying the subject as Beethoven.
On the side of the bust a stamped inscription reading "OPPONENT" (partially visible as oppone..t) is present. This is most likely not a maker's mark, but a descriptive or allegorical term, referring to Beethoven's historical role as a musical revolutionary and opponent of classical conventions. Such symbolic inscriptions are known from late-19th-century educational and decorative sculpture.
Probably produced for academic, musical or bourgeois interiors, such busts were popular in conservatories and private salons. The work appears to be a period reproduction, not a unique portrait sculpture.
Material: terracotta or patinated plaster
Date: circa 1880-1920
Origin: likely French or German
Function: decorative / educational bust
traces of use see pictures
