Antique Ethiopian Hand Cross - 19th Century
This is a fine example of an antique Ethiopian processional hand cross, dating from the 19th century. Cast and hand-finished in bronze/brass (and one in silvered alloy), these crosses were traditionally used by Ethiopian Orthodox priests during processions and blessings.
The openwork design, with repeating cross motifs and a circular frame, strongly evokes the beauty of Celtic cross patterns, making it a striking piece for both collectors of religious artifacts and lovers of symbolic art.
The openwork design, with intricate interlacing and repeated cross motifs, reflects the ancient Christian tradition of Ethiopia, one of the world's oldest Christian communities. Each cross is unique, made by local craftsmen, and carries symbolic meaning of eternal faith and protection.
The long conical handle was designed so that the priest could hold the cross upright during ceremonies, often touching it to the forehead of the faithful as a blessing. The pieces show a beautiful, time-worn patina consistent with age and devotional use.
Origin: Ethiopia, 19th century
Material: Bronze/brass (one silvered)
Dimensions: ca. 35-38 cm in length
Condition: Good antique condition, with signs of age and use
Such processional crosses are highly collectible, valued both as sacred objects and as outstanding examples of Ethiopian Christian art.
