This Delft tile depicts two icons of the Netherlands; Delft blue and the tulip. The tulip is the Dutch national symbol and was already the most admired flower (and bulb) in the 17th century. This tile was made around 1640-1660 and is more common with the corner motifs 'winged leaf' or 'wanli'. This version, with the corner motif 'ox head', is quite rare. The tile is in good condition, some edge chips have been filled, no restorations

Size: ca 13 x13 x 1 cm

Dutch (‘Delftse') antique tiles are collectibles with great historical value. They are small authentic beautiful pieces of antique art from the 17th century, often with an interesting representation of this time. These majolica tiles are a type of pottery in which an earthenware clay body (usually a red pottery) is coated with an opaque white glaze (traditionally a lead glaze including tin), then painted with stains or glazes and fired. From about the 16th century, the Dutch were introduced to the technique of painting pottery in bright, glossy colours. At Lokken-Ausema we have been collecting tiles for a long time.
