Rare Dutch Polychrome Tile with Stag in square - Zeeland, ca. 1600 - 1620

This is a rare and beautifully preserved Dutch polychrome tile from Zeeland, dating to around 1620-1650.
The tile features a majestic stag standing in a stylized landscape, painted in ochre, cobalt blue, green, and manganese — classic early 17th-century colors.

The stag is placed within a diagonal rhombus frame (kwadraat composition), a hallmark of early Dutch tile design. The corners are filled with elegant cross-and-dot floral motifs, often found on tiles from Middelburg and the Zeeland region.

This tile is unusually thick, measuring approx. 14 mm, and was hand-cut and tin-glazed in the traditional majolica technique. It shows fine age-related craquelure, minor glaze losses, and authentic edge wear — all consistent with its 400+ years of history.

Highly collectible and museum-worthy, this tile represents an important period in early Dutch faience, reflecting both artistic beauty and skilled craftsmanship.

Dutch (‘Delftse') antique tiles are collectibles with great historical value. They are small authentic beautiful pieces of antique art from the 17th century, often with an interesting representation of this time. These majolica tiles are a type of pottery in which an earthenware clay body (usually a red pottery) is coated with an opaque white glaze (traditionally a lead glaze including tin), then painted and fired. From about the 16th century, the Dutch were introduced to the technique of painting pottery in bright, glossy colours.
