This child is playing one of the oldest ball games of the Netherlands, known as 'Beugelen'. Apart from the Netherlands, the game was also played in Germany and Belgium. It dates back from the 14th century and was very popular during the 17th century. The player had to use a club to hit a ball through a wooden ring, which would result in winning the round. If they missed and the ball stayed within the playing field, the opponent had the opportunity to use his ball to knock out the ball of the first player. On an engraving made by Rembrandt van Rijn in 1654 a 'beugel' player is depicted. You can find a photo of this engraving added to this page. The tile dates from around 1650 and is decorated with 'ox-head' corner motifs.
