Antique Dietrich Reimer Terrestrial Globe Berlin c. 1914 - 33 cm Pre-WWI Erdglobus
Antique terrestrial globe by Dietrich Reimer, Berlin, dating to circa 1913-1914. The cartouche reads "Dietrich Reimers Erdglobus, herausgegeben von dem Kartogr. Institut der Verlagsbuchhandlung von D. Reimer (E. Vohsen), Berlin."
The globe retains its historical pre-First World War geography, including the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Russian Empire and the colonial divisions of Africa. The detailed cartography includes cities, borders, railways and maritime information, providing a fascinating record of the political and geographical world immediately before the First World War.
The approximately 33 cm / 13 in globe is constructed with printed paper gores and mounted within its original graduated metal half-meridian. It rests on a tall turned wooden column with circular base and brass fittings. Total height approximately 70 cm / 27.6 in.
The surface has developed a beautiful warm patina and shows considerable traces of more than a century of age and use, including wear, craquelure, discolouration and losses to the printed paper. Please examine the photographs carefully as these form an important part of the description.
An impressive early 20th-century German globe and decorative historical object, particularly interesting for collectors of antique maps, cartography, scientific instruments and pre-WWI history.
