18th Century Bohemian Hand-Carved Polychrome Corpus Christi, circa 1750-1800
An 18th-century hand-carved wooden Corpus Christi from Bohemia, present-day Czech Republic, dating to circa 1750-1800.
Carved from limewood, with a finely worked face, crown of thorns, anatomical detailing and draped loincloth. Remnants of the original polychromy remain, especially on the loincloth, with traces of green, red and dark pigment.
The figure measures approximately 41 cm in height. Both arms are missing. The surface shows extensive age-related wear, losses to the original paint and gesso, old cracks and marks consistent with its age and former ecclesiastical use.
