17th Century Romanian Orthodox Icon - Saints Cyros, Prokoulos & Paraskeva
Authentic late 17th-century Romanian (Wallachian) Orthodox icon, painted in egg tempera on wood.
This devotional panel depicts the saints Cyros (Kyros), Prokoulos (Proculus) and Saint Paraskeva, a rare and meaningful liturgical combination associated with Good Friday.
Executed in the characteristic Wallachian painting style of the period: linear drawing, restrained modelling, strong contours and a sober, frontal presentation of the figures. The icon belongs to the same artistic tradition as contemporary Wallachian iconostasis painting, but was made as a smaller devotional panel rather than a monumental church icon.
The icon is preserved on its original wooden panel with historic transverse battens on the reverse. An old natural varnish layer (applied historically for protection) is present and has not been removed. A later hanging loop was added in the 19th-early 20th century, typical for icons entering private collections.
Condition:
Original paint layer with age-related wear and craquelure; no modern repainting or restoration. Structurally stable.
Origin: Romania (Wallachia / Moldavia)
Date: ca. 1670-1700
Medium: Egg tempera on wood
Dimensions: approx. 30 × 27 cm
Old German collection label on the reverse confirming identification and dating.
This icon has been left untouched, preserving its historical integrity. Conservation, if ever required, should only be undertaken by a qualified icon conservator.
