The hannekemaaiers were seasonal workers from Germany (mainly from Westphalia and the County of Lingen in the seventeenth to the nineteenth century) who came to the Netherlands on foot in the summer to work in the fields. The term hannekemaaier comes from the name Johannes, usually abbreviated to Hannes[1] and is taken from the day of traditional entry into service, Saint John's Day (June 24).[2] Another name is grass sleeve.[3][4]
The first hand mowers came to mow grass. Because the Dutch were interested in German merchandise, some Dutchmen started taking them with them in baskets carried on their backs. In Groningen they were called kiepkeerls and Veelnks (Westfalingers). An estimated 140,000 hanneke mowers from present-day Germany settled permanently in the Netherlands
